Its impact on global health was so significant that researchers Satoshi Ōmura and William C. Campbell were awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work related to its discovery and development.
Ivermectin was approved for veterinary use in 1981 and later approved for human use in 1987. Today, it is available in several forms, including oral tablets and topical creams.
Why Is Ivermectin So Widely Used?
For decades, ivermectin has been used to treat a range of parasitic infections in both humans and animals. Its effectiveness, affordability, and relatively favorable safety profile have made it one of the most widely distributed medicines in public health programs worldwide.
